Why Mentor Networks Matter: Inside Educating Africa's Careers Field Trip to Telesoftas

Why Mentor Networks Matter: Inside Educating Africa's Careers Field Trip to Telesoftas
At Educating Africa, we believe that a child's future is shaped not only by what they learn in the classroom, but by who they meet along the way. That's why building strong mentor networks and creating real-world career exposure opportunities sit at the heart of our mission.
This belief came to life recently when we took our students on an inspiring careers field trip to Telesoftas, a leading digital and technology company. The day was packed with learning, laughter, hands-on experiences, and eye-opening conversations about the world of work and the impact on our students was nothing short of transformational.
The Power of Mentor Networks for Young African Students
For many of our students, their dreams are shaped by what they see around them. Without exposure to professionals working in diverse fields, their idea of "what's possible" can feel limited. Mentor networks change that.
Here's why mentorship is so vital to Educating Africa's work:
- Expands horizons — Students discover careers they never knew existed
- Builds confidence — Hearing real stories from real professionals makes ambition feel achievable
- Provides role models — Especially powerful for young people from underserved communities
- Develops soft skills — Communication, networking, and professional etiquette
- Creates accountability — Mentors help students stay focused on their long-term goals
- Opens doors — Internships, scholarships, and future opportunities often start with a single connection
By embedding mentorship into our programmes, we're ensuring our students don't just dream big — they have the guidance, support, and networks to make those dreams a reality.
Why Careers Field Trips Are a Game-Changer
There's only so much a textbook can teach. Careers field trips allow students to step into real workplaces, meet professionals, and experience first-hand what a career actually looks and feels like. They make abstract ideas tangible and they ignite curiosity in ways no lesson plan can replicate.
For many of our students, the trip to Telesoftas was their first time stepping inside a modern digital workplace and the experience was unforgettable.
Highlights from Our Careers Field Trip to Telesoftas
Exploring the World of Digital Careers
Our students were welcomed into the Telesoftas offices, where industry professionals introduced them to the exciting landscape of digital careers. From software development and UX/UI design to project management, data, and product roles, students discovered the wide variety of pathways available in the tech industry.
They learned that you don't have to be a coder to work in tech — there's a place for creatives, communicators, strategists, and problem-solvers too.
Hands-On Design Session
Theory met practice in an engaging hands-on design session led by the Telesoftas team. Students were guided through the basics of digital design, exploring how ideas are turned into real products that people use every day.
They sketched, brainstormed, and collaborated in teams, getting a true taste of what it feels like to think like a designer. The room buzzed with creativity as students realised they could actually see themselves in roles like these.
"Pop the Balloon": A Fun Twist on Career Awareness
One of the most memorable moments of the day was our playful but powerful "Pop the Balloon" game - with a twist. Each balloon contained a career suggestion, and students had to pop the balloons representing careers that were inappropriate or unsuitable for young people.
This activity sparked lively discussion around:
- What makes a career safe, ethical, and age-appropriate
- The importance of making informed choices about future pathways
- Recognising risky or exploitative work young people should avoid
- Understanding legal and developmental boundaries in employment
It was a brilliant way to combine fun, critical thinking, and life skills - leaving students not just entertained, but better equipped to navigate their futures wisely.
The Lasting Impact on Our Students
By the end of the day, our students walked away with so much more than memories. They left with:
- New role models and connections in the digital industry
- A clearer vision of the careers available to them
- Practical design skills they tried for themselves
- Confidence that they belong in spaces like these
- A deeper understanding of healthy and appropriate career choices
Most importantly, they left believing that their futures are full of possibility.
A Huge Thank You to Telesoftas
We extend our deepest gratitude to the Telesoftas team for opening their doors, sharing their expertise, and pouring genuine care into our students. Partnerships like these are exactly what make our mentor networks so powerful and we look forward to many more collaborations ahead.
